Painting With Fire

Earlier this week, I had some of my team in a little early for some team meetings, so we decided to head out and do a little painting.  We had some great conditions to get good reflections off of the water.  As always, it was a lot of fun and we came home with some great images.

Stars with a point and shoot camera

This week, I spent some time Las Vegas this week for work, and had the opportunity to spend a bit of time out in Valley Of Fire State Park.  While there, I set up the Canon PowerShot S120 to capture some stars.  The first night we were out there was 1 night after the new moon, so it was good and dark.

Most of these images were shot using the star trails scene mode in the PowerShot S120.  This mode lets you set the camera to run from 10 to 90 minutes.  You can also stop it at any time during the capture.  These first 4 were done using various lengths of captures.

A little light painting.

Must have been a rabbit that jumped in front of that plane to make him swerve like that.

This was the view when I woke up.  That's Venus, the bright one.
This one was captured using the Night Scene mode.

This last image was captured with the PowerShot G16.  It is a 2 hour stack of images, done in camera.

Locomotive Springs

The other day, my friend Doug and I made a quick, last minute trip out to Locomotive Springs.  The intent was to hang out around the old buildings and catch the sunset.  Well, we got there and main gate was closed, so we had to walk the rest of the way in.  Out of a bit of laziness, I decided to leave my bag of gear in the car and grabbed my G16, S120, a tripod, and a Fat Gecko.  The wind was blowing pretty hard and the clouds were cruising by, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to play around with the Star Time Laps and Star Trail modes on these cameras.  Turns out it was a good choice.  I found a spot to set up the S120 on the Fat Gecko and started a time lapse and then used the G16 in Star Trail mode to capture the movement of the clouds.  It was a lot of fun, and I think the results are pretty cool.  Especially considering these came from a point and shoot camera.
