Sun Tunnels - Part One

Last weekend, my buddy Rusty and I made a trek out to the Lucin Sun Tunnels with the hope of getting in some Milky Way shots.  I'll post those images later, for now, here's a collection of images from sunset and sunrise the following morning.

Valley Of Fire

Valley Of Fire is one of my favorite places to shoot.  It doesn't matter what time of day you visit, there are amazing images to be made everywhere.  On a recent trip to Vegas for work, one of my reps and I went in a day early so that we could spend a bit of time shooting.  I shot these images while Drew and I were checking out some new places to do light painting.

Sun Tunnels Sunset

Well, it wouldn't be right if I didn't post some sunset images at the Sun Tunnels.

Jefferson Memorial

While in Washington DC recently for work, I was out one evening for a wander.  I decided that I wanted to head over and shoot the Jefferson Memorial.  Well, my plans were changed by something going on that included several fire trucks, some ambulances, and a bunch of police cars.  The route I need to walk, wasn't an option.  So, Instead of Jefferson, I decided to head to Lincoln.  Now, I found myself walking along the tidal basin, with a great view of Jefferson across the water.  I could see that the sunset was starting to build, so I picked a spot, set up my tripod and enjoyed the show.  And what a show it was!

Locomotive Springs

Last winter, my son and I discovered Locomotive Springs, a wildlife management area at the far north end of the Great Salt Lake.  Since then, I've thought that it would be a great place to do some light painting.  Last night, some friends and I headed out there to do just that.  Well, we got out there and the gates were closed. The wind was blowing pretty hard, and the conditions were extremely dry, so we decided that it wouldn't be the best idea to use some of our standard light painting tools.  Without all of our tools, we decided that it wouldn't be worth the hassle to haul in all of our gear.  We made the decision to relocate our painting, more on that later.  Meanwhile, we figured while we were there, we should wander a bit and make a few images.  The setting sun and dramatic skies made for some decent images.

For the last couple of weeks, I have had the opportunity to shoot a Canon 5D Mk III.  This last image is a straight-out-of-camera image created using the on-board HDR feature.  I need to play around with this a little more to get a good feel for it, but it seems to do a pretty decent job.

Yoga

While out at the Great Salt Lake shooting the sunset the other night, there was another photographer doing a shoot with five girls on paddle boards doing yoga.
It was a fantastic idea and the conditions couldn't have been better.
I don't know what kind of results he was getting, but my shots turned out pretty well.

With the exception of cropping, these images are straight out of the camera.  Notice how the light changes over the series.
A total of 36 minutes elapsed between the first and the last shots.

Images were created using the Canon 1D Mk IV and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens.
