A Bit of Painting in Oregon

I guess I'm a bit behind on posting. Back in October, I was in Portland for work and was able to meet up with a friend to shoot.  We took the opportunity to do a little light painting.

Sun Tunnels and Star Trails

So, a couple of weeks ago, some friends and I spent the night out at the Lucin Sun Tunnels.  We spent a good amount of time doing some light painting and then set things up to catch some stars.  My intent was to capture enough frames for a couple of time lapse sequences.  The beauty of this method is that you can use them for time lapse and to stack for some star trail images.  We got started pretty late, or early, depending on how you look at it, so the last third of the frames were completely blown out.  I did manage to get enough for a couple of short sequences, with the sun rising and the stars fading.  Good stuff.  Added bonus: I was able to create these two images by stacking over 220 frames for each image.  I love the combination of the stars and the rich colors of the morning light.  Did I mention how fantastic these are?

A short time at Snowbasin

Yesterday morning, I got up early and headed up the hill with a couple of friends to shoot the sunrise.  Sunrise turned out to be a bust, so we headed to the Old Snowbasin Highway to see what we could find.  What we found was that the road was closed due to a car accident.  So, we turned around and headed up to the  Snowbasin ski resort, our intent was to find a spot to shoot some time lapse of the last remaining bits of the sunrise.  It turns out that we ended up near one of the lifts, and had a great view of the final preparations prior to opening for the season.  I'm pretty happy with the material that I shot, but I need to go back to finish the story.

A Little Painting

Utah has some pretty unique works of art scattered around in the desert.  One of my favorites is the Sun Tunnels near the old ghost town of Lucin.  As interesting as the tunnels are on their own, they look even better with a little paint on them!

Wild Rides

Here's my latest time lapse project, shot while visiting the Utah State Fair.  It was fun to shoot the rides, I didn't get to half of them, perhaps next year.  An interesting side note and a warning if you plan to try this at your local fair or carnival.  Beware of the carnies.  You are a captive audience and they love to chat.  Chances are, they won't have a clue as to what you are doing, even with repeated attempts to explain.  You may get lucky and have the opportunity to chat with one or two that have the attention span of a goldfish.  Good times.

The Posts - Time Lapse

A couple of weeks ago, my son and I got up before the crack of dawn and made the 90 min trek out to Rozel Point to enjoy the sunrise.  Rozel is on the North end of the Great Salt Lake and is almost in the middle of nowhere.  Not only is Rozel a next-door neighbor of the Spiral Jetty, it's got the remains of some old oil-exploration drilling rigs.  This has become one of my favorite places to shoot, you've seen the posts in my previous work.  The way storms roll in off of the lake, you just never know what kind of shooting conditions you will end up with.  This particular morning, the conditions couldn't have been better.  The color of the lake can vary greatly throughout the year and this day it was a nice, deep, red. The storms clouds rolling off of the lake were fantastic, and really added to the mood.  Perfect opportunity to shoot some time lapse.  

I'm still refining my skills and techniques with Time lapse.  I've learned a lot, but I still have much to learn.  There are some technical issues with this, but overall, I'm pleased with the end results.  I'd love to hear your opinions, good, bad, or otherwise, in the comments below.

Awfully Quiet Around Here

Hey folks, I apologize for the lack of posting lately.  It's been a busy few weeks with work and a family vacation.  I've been working on a time lapse project and some computer issues have really slowed things down.  Thanks for hanging in there, here's a frame from one of the sequences for my current project.  I'll try to get a few more posted in the next few days.

Memory Grove

 A couple of weeks ago, a couple of friends and I headed into Salt Lake to do a little light painting.  Normally, we are painting in some pretty dark areas.  This time, being in the city, there was a lot of light to deal with.  It was a fun challenge to try and balance things out.
