When All Else Fails, Paint

The other night, I took my two oldest kids and we headed out west in an attempt to get a shot or two of the comet, Pan STARRS while there was still an opportunity.  Well, it turns out that the weather had other plans and heavy clouds settled in.  We figured that we should hang out to see how the sunset turned out.  It didn't. The clouds were pretty heavy, so the light fizzled pretty quickly.  What did that leave for us to do?  We painted.

This first image is my favorite form the session.  This was pretty early in the evening, so there was still some good ambient light.  I love the surreal feeling created by the combination of the late evening light and the painted light.  When a photographer friend Peter, who grew up in England, saw this, this was his response: "This image gives me a certain reminder of the south coast beaches in England throughout the 1940's when we were expecting Hitler to invade. They all had various forms of ant-tank and invasion barge defenses plus coils of barbed wire rather like this."  I think he may me on to something.

These next three images are the same image, processed in different ways.

The kids asked me to write their names for them.

I only had a couple of chunks of steel wool with me, so only a couple of fire images on this trip.

Coloring In The Dark

These images were taken several years ago while spending some time camping with my family.
I've always loved how the light worked to isolate them and put them into their own little world.

Christmas Lights & Fireworks

I stopped by The Imaging Depot today to see what they had that I couldn't live without.  I got to chatting with Mat about the parade and the Christmas Village lighting ceremonies that were happening a little later.  Well, to make a long story short, he was kind enough to invite us to come back and watch the fireworks from the roof.  We took him up on it and headed back for the parade and the fireworks.  It was pretty cool!

Light Painting In Vegas

While in Vegas with my friends from my photo club, I took a few of them out one night for their first taste of light painting.
I ended up without a remote trigger, so I cranked up the ISO to 5000 and shot these handheld.  They are all around 1/4 second exposures.
I must say, that I like the results.  I'm going to have to experiment with this some more.

Light Painting at Temple Of The Birds

While my friend Dale was in town this week, I decided he needed to be introduced the the world of Light Painting.
Doug and Rusty joined us and we headed out to Temple Of The Birds for a little fun.  We even brought my son along to give him a taste.
Always a good time!

Light Painting at the Sun Tunnels

Saturday night some friends and I headed way out West to the Sun Tunnels to do some light painting.  To get to the Sun Tunnels, you head out to the middle of nowhere, then head South and East a bit.  The tunnels are a pretty unique art installation that's been out there for about 35 years.  They are 9 feet tall and 13 feet long.  The cool part about them is that they are lined up so that the sun will rise and set through them during the Summer and Winter solstice.  I'm gonna have to plan a trip back out there next June for the solstice.
