A Day at the Zoo

The other week, I got to spend a day at the zoo with one of my favorite little people. This has become an annual outing for us.  I think it's safe to say we had a good time.

She wanted her picture taken with all of the animal statues.  It was a good exercise in patience for her to wait for the other kids to get out of the way.

If you know Becca, you know that she loves staring contests.  She had one with the gorilla.

She won.

Balloons

Last week, while shooting the Sandy Balloon Festival, I decided to shoot video, you can see the video here. Of course, I had to grab a few still frames as well. These were all shot with the Canon PowerShot S120.

The Ogden Temple

Went to the open house at the Ogden Temple last night with my oldest.  I was traveling light, so I grabbed some shots of the temple with my PowerShot S120.

Star Trails

For those of you that regularly check my blog (all three of you), you know that I have become a big fan of the capabilities of the Canon PowerShot S120.  For a compact point and shoot camera, it does an amazing job.  The other night, while shooting the stars for time lapse, I pulled out the S120 and used the Star Trails mode to capture the stars.  I set the camera to run for 90 minutes and walked away.  This is what I came back to:
Canon PowerShot S120
30 Sec - f/1.8 - ISO 400 - 5.2 mm

While I was at it, I set up the PowerShot G1 X Mk II to do the same thing.  This was the first time I shot stars with this camera so I was anxious to see how it performed.  I set it to run for two hours and let it do the work.  As expected, It did an amazing job:
Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II
30 Sec - f/2 - ISO 320 - 12.5 mm

Long Exposures with a Point and Shoot

The other night, I met a couple of friends out at the Great Salt Lake for sunset and a little light painting. It was really good to get out again.  While there, I set up my Canon PowerShot S120 on top of my DSLR and captured a few images using the StarTrails mode.  As always, the results from this little camera were fantastic.

Meatloaf

This is something completely different than you are used to seeing around here, but I had to write about it.  Last week, my family and I spent a bit of time in the mountains.  It had been a long time since we had done any dutch oven cooking, and we decided that it was time to give it a shot again.  Several months ago, I saw a recipe for dutch oven meatloaf that caught my eye.  It wasn't necessarily the meatloaf, but the fact that it was wrapped in bacon.  Yup, bacon.  Well, I decided that this needed to be part of our menu for the weekend.

It's really pretty simple, there's nothing fancy to the meatloaf recipe.  Most anything would do.  Mine had 1lb ground turkey, rolled oats, an egg, salt, pepper, onions, and some garlic.

Start with an empty dutch oven.  We used an 8" oven.

Line the oven with bacon.  Let the ends hang over the sides, they won't stay there long.

Add your meatloaf.

I topped it with some sliced onions.  Next time, I will add sliced onions under the meatloaf as well.

Wrap the ends of the bacon over so that everything is tucked in.

It took about 45 minutes to cook.  More coals on top, less on the bottom.

It was absolutely amazing and didn't last long.

Valley Of Fire

Valley Of Fire is one of my favorite places to shoot.  It doesn't matter what time of day you visit, there are amazing images to be made everywhere.  On a recent trip to Vegas for work, one of my reps and I went in a day early so that we could spend a bit of time shooting.  I shot these images while Drew and I were checking out some new places to do light painting.
