The VLA

While in New Mexico the other week, we had an afternoon off and made a trip down to the Very Large Array.  the VLA is a set of huge radio antennae that measure 82 feet in diameter.  There are 27 of them, arranged in a Y pattern.  While they were in a pretty compact pattern for our visit, they can be moved and spread to cover an area 22 miles in diameter.  The science and technology behind this array is pretty amazing, and the images they produce are spectacular.  It was well worth the drive to visit this place, especially since we ended up with a pretty fantastic sunset while we were there.
