Well, light painting season has officially started. We headed out to Idaho yesterday for an afternoon model shoot and then, when the sun went down, it was time to paint. Our location was pretty fantastic, though it was a little sketchy in places. It was a good day and I came home with some pretty decent images.

Stars and Clouds in Zion
Here's my second time lapse of the stars in Zion National Park. I love the clouds moving through this one. Pretty fantastic. The technical stuff behind this one is a bit different than the Stars over Kolob video. This time, I brought my shutter speed up to 5 seconds (from 15 seconds) and adjusted the ISO to compensate. Because of this, I ended up with about 2200 images over a four hour period. I'm glad I made the decision that I did. Had I gone with a slower shutter, I think the outcome of the clouds would not have been ideal. I've had a couple of questions about the light that flickers in the beginning. Behind and below me is the highway that runs through Zion National Park. The bits of light are from passing cars. Towards the end of the film, you can see that the wind started to pick up as the bushes are moving quite a bit.
Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the results.

66 & Main
The other night, I had the opportunity to shoot a local band. As expected, the lighting conditions were tough, but that just added to the challenge.
Here's a collection of my favorites from the evening.

66 & Main - Time Lapse
The other night, I had the opportunity to shoot a local band called 66 & Main. They are a great band and it was fun to shoot them. We decided to show up a bit early and shoot time lapse of them setting up for the gig. This is one of the series that I shot, about 2100 images over about 45 minutes. The images were processed and the video was rendered at 30fps in Lightroom 3, using a preset from www.lrtimelapse.com.

Prom
I had the opportunity to shoot some prom pictures for a pretty good group of kids this past weekend. We were up against rapidly fading light (well, actually, it was pretty dark by the time we got started) and rain. In an effort to be prepared, I stopped and picked up a bunch of umbrellas on the way to the shoot, just in case. Luckily, we didn't need them as the rain finally let up just as we got to the location. Shooting in the dark wasn't too big of a problem, we had four speedlights along to provide the light. We used Wrapix light modifiers to control the light. The biggest challenge was getting focus. Tough to do in the dark. This was solved by using a cell phone with the backlight on, held where we needed the focus. Once focus was grabbed, my lovely assistant jumped out of the way and I fired the shot. All in all, it was a good shoot and I'm pleased with the results. Thanks to Rusty and Doug for the assist on this one!
Here's a couple of the finished images as well as a couple of "behind the scenes" shots.

Stars over Kolob
So, here it is, my first attempt at a time lapse of stars. Be gentle, it's not perfect and has some issues. But, overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out.
This is in Kolob Canyon, part of Zion National Park in Southern, Utah. The video was created using about 800 images that were captured over a period of just under 4 hours.

Grandpa Joe
Been rummaging through some old images and thought I'd post a couple of my favorites from my grandfather's funeral.

Light Painting in Zion
While in Southern Utah last week, I spent a couple of nights in Zion National Park, shooting the stars. While there, I took the opportunity to do a bit of light painting. The first two images were shot in Kolob Canyon, the rest were shot in Zion Canyon.

Stars and Technical Difficulties
I'm dealing with a dead monitor right now, so I've had to put editing on hold. I'm hoping to be up and running again soon. In the mean time, I did some basic edits on this shot from last week. This is a test image that I shot while setting up for some star time lapse last week. This was shot at Kolob Canyon in Southern Utah. I love getting out away from the light pollution. The only thing that would have made this night better was if it was a bit warmer out. Hopefully I'll be back up and running soon. I've got work to catch up on.

Rear View Time Lapse
As you know, I've been tinkering around with time lapse lately. This last week, I had the opportunity to try out a few things that I had been mulling over. Here's the first one. This is the drive from St George, UT to Zion National Park. However, this is the view from the rear-view mirror. The 1745 images for this time lapse were captured on my smartphone, using the Lapse It Pro app. I processed the images and rendered the video in Lightroom 4.
